"Sisters at Heart"

I received a note from a friend of mine that brought floods of thoughts of all the women who have been a special part of my life. I wanted to share some of those thoughts and memories and hope that you will also share some as well.

My mom Bernice... She is Thankfully still alive and healthy and she is a beautiful women inside and out.
Mom and her 8 siblings (there were 7 sisters and 2 brothers) had a rather hard life in their younger years. When I hear stories of how they were brought up, it makes me extremely thankful for all that I had growing up, and for what I have now. She taught me not to take anything for granted, never to be greedy and to be generous and appreciative with all that I have.

My Paternal Grandmother Anne (RIP)... She was the sweetest woman to walk this earth. I never once in my life heard her utter a complaint or speak badly of anyone. Who in this world can say that today? I really TRY to live my life in that image. I hate cattiness and gossip and have been the victim of both more than my share of times. So, when I find myself starting to go there... I put myself in the other persons shoes and ask myself how I would feel if I were being talked about or treated that way.

My Maternal Grandmother Bernice passed away when I was only 6, so I have few memories of her. What really stuck with me though, was that I was a little afraid and intimidated by her. I don't ever remember her showing me any affection. Not even a hug?... This unfortunately trickled down to my mom because she was never shown that type of attention in her life so, she never held me or hugged me (that I can remember) outside of when I was a baby or unless I was ill.  (We just discussed this for the first time a couple of years ago. It was a very emotional conversation needless to say...) Surprisingly, as painful as this was to me, it influenced me in a positive way in the long run. I am really an affectionate person and have always loved and welcome hugs. My children were (are) drenched in my loving arms every chance I could (can) get ;)

My sister Terri... I only have one sibling. Although we love each other dearly, she and I were never close as far back as I can remember. In our adult lives we have gotten closer and have tried to help each other through tough times. She influences me most by her gifts that she has. She is extremely artistic and can design a room fit for a queen, sew anything from a square for a quilt, to beautiful window treatments, or an outfit anyone would be proud to wear. She also used to write lyrics from the heart, sing, play guitar, paint, draw, craft... You name it, she can do it. She inspired me to find my own talents.

My "Honorary Auntie" Pat. This women has shown me so much love and support throughout my life. She is a woman that should have had a dozen children, but was never able to have any. I share my family with her and am grateful that she is a part of it and an influence on my children. She has had my back on more than one occasion and I will always have hers...

The one person that was my "Sister" in every sense of the word, but by blood, was Janine. She was and will always be that best friend and soulmate. She knew everything about me and loved me no matter what. She held my deepest darkest secrets and I hers. She was my "Person."

In our teen years we had our fair share of arguments, spats and jealousy's, etc... But when it came down to it, all the important stuff that matters, she was there like no one else.

A great example of just one such occasion is the day that my life as I knew it fell apart. Within a few hours of getting my hysterical phone call that my husband was having an affair and leaving me, she was coming through my front door. This sounds like something any friend would do right? The thing is....  I lived in Naperville, IL and she was in Fortworth, Texas!!! She hung up, threw some things in a bag, told her husband she had to go, hopped on an airplane and walked into my house and took care of me and my 3 little boys until I could pull myself together enough to do it myself. No "What can I do for you?" Janine just knew, and did it.

There were many times we were there for each other like that, both for joyous occasions and sad occasions. I helped her make it through her excitement and disappointments of trying to conceive and all the fertility treatments she endured. I held her hand when she decided to leave it in Gods hands whether or not she would have a child.
She watched over me and supported me as I struggled as a single parent for many years.
We celebrated joyously as Janine stood up for me as my Maid of Honor when she was gloriously 6 months pregnant with her first child, and I was marrying my husband and love of my life Chris.
I was there in TX to welcome her new little boy Jacob.
Sadly, shortly there after..., I was there to help her husband Paul take care of her when she was collapsed with a brain tumor.
And then the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life...
I had to help her leave this world, and me. I had to make her believe that all of us were going to be OK. That it was OK to "Rest in Gods hands." Janine died with more grace and dignity than anyone I know. I am so honored and blessed to have had a this woman in my life. It has left a huge hole in my life that I have slowly tried to fill over the past years.

To be continued....

Shopping Ralph by Ralph Lauren-Come share my personal Stylist!!!

JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS!!!

As  Chicago Glambassador, I have been given the opportunity to have a complimentary appointment with a Ralph Lauren stylist at the Macy's State Street Store (111 North State Street, Chicago, IL 60602) I am also allowed to bring a few of my fashionista friends with as well. Please let me know if and when you would like to go. It would be so much fun!

If you happen to find yourself shopping the Ralph by Ralph Lauren line anywhere and wouldn't mind sharing which items you purchased from the line and your thoughts and opinions about the line, that would be awesome! One of my assignments this month is to track purchases of the Ralph line and turn in the names of the purchasers with a copy of their receipt to my Ralph Lauren rep at Glamour. I need those by no later than 12/19/09.
Special notes:

  • If you want to make this shopping trip and outing really fun, send me your pictures or video of you and your friends shopping Lauren by Ralph Lauren
  • Please note, Ralph Lauren clothes do not count; only Lauren by Ralph Lauren
  • (You may want to make a photocopy of receipts or email me what is coming in the mail in case any thing gets lost)

Thanksgiving

With the Thanksgiving season upon us, I wanted to take a few moments to reflect on some of the things that I am most grateful for in life.

I have been blessed with many things in life, but the things that I am most grateful for are:

My loving husband and our beautiful family (3 amazing sons and a beautiful little girl)
Our good health
The ability to remain a positive person, even through some very trying and difficult times
My freedom
The men and women that allow me that freedom by serving our country
Second chances
My mom and the friendship we share
My lifelong friends and the new friends and acquaintances I have made this year
A comfortable home and place to rest our heads
The love and acceptance my husbands family has shown me and the boys all these years
Food in my fridge and cabinets
Smiles on my children's faces
The opportunity and my desire to help others in need
The gift of life and the opportunity to experience all it has to offer on a daily basis

And then there are the more superficial, fun (but still important) things that I am grateful for as well:

Becoming a Glambassador for Glamour and the wonderful opportunities it has allowed me thus-far
Finally finding jeans that fit my body that I actually love!
Losing a few pounds
Finding some of the best Sushi I have ever had (Zaidi's of course!)
Being a part of Fashion Week Naperville (Thank you Kristen and Kristy;)
Facebook for reacquainting me with so many friends I had lost touch with

Have a blessed Thanksgiving everyone!
Hugs,
Tami

My Newest Glambassador Challenge

What I have done so far in my Glambassador position

My first assignment as a Glambassador was to give out the Target gift cards that were sent to me to be used on Maybeline products. These were greatly appreciated by my friends and family that were lucky enough to receive them.

Next I had to create a video with the Flip videocam that Glamour Magazine gave to me when they made me a Glambassador. The problem was, I had a very short deadline and no one to shoot if for me, so I held the camera myself and just sort of "Winged it" which is very apparent when you watch it. It is actually quite humorous which wasn't my intent, but what are you gonna do... You can watch this video by going to this link:
http://www.glamalert.com/glambassador/

just click on Chicago and then scroll down to my video for a good laugh. I apologize in advance;)

I have done promotions for Ann Taylor, Macy's and I am currently working on something for Movado and Nexxus. I have a Glamour "Canon Ball" to attend on Dec. 4th with some of the other Glambassadors to look forward to.

The most fun thing that I have done so far since being named a Glambassador by Glamour, was being asked by Two K Productions if I would be a guest judge for their modeling contest  which was an event for Fashion Week Naperville. Let me tell you it was an awesome week of fun, fashion, mingling, greeting, meeting some absolutely wonderful people, a couple great job leads for my business, possible modeling opportunities for my sons, etc... All made possible by my position as Glamour Glambassador. Thank you Glamour Magazine!!!

Still Backpeddling...

As you might have noticed, I have done a lot of blogging on this day. It is because I wanted to start from the beginning, but the beginning was quite awhile ago, so I am catching up as time has allowed me to today.

A little bit about me...
I am the mother of four. My children range in age from 23 to 7 years old. I am married to an absolutely wonderful man who makes my life fun. He is an entertainer and has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard and I'm not just saying that because he's my hubby. (I still get goosebumps sometimes when I hear him sing after all these years:) My husband and I are both really involved in our church. I am a deeply "Spiritual" person and have struggled with religion and what I actually do or don't believe. But, I am openminded about it and continue to learn and serve on a regular basis. I love helping others and try to volunteer and rally for as many causes that I can. I have owned my own business for almost 14 years. It started out as a recording studio, but has evolved into pretty much anything media related. I have always been a very artistic person and love to draw, paint, sculpt, create in all mediums. I also write lyrics and poetry, play the guitar and can carry a tune or two...lol. I have been through hell and back more than my share in my life, but have always come out a stronger and better person in spite of it.
I am not a vain person, but I have always prided myself in trying to be the best that I can be by staying healthy, attractive and fashionable. I do it for me, but I love to share my knowledge and intuition with others. I am a firm believer that you don't have to be rich and/or famous to live a fun and GLAMOUR Us life;)  I should know... I am neither of those. While I do live in a very wealthy and prosperous community, I have a very humble home surrounded by beautiful "McMansions" (as we call them in Naperville), I drive a 2000 Chevy Impala, not a Lexus, BMW or Mercedes. It's not that I am opposed to any of these luxuries... As a matter of fact, I would welcome the opportunity to experience financial "Utopia" again some day and I would be lying if I said that I didn't get envious every now of my friends and neighbors. I have had the sportscar (ahhh....my beautiful Corvette) and a lot more money than I have now. Life was definitely easier financially in the past, but I am so much happier in life at this moment in time. I am wealthy in friendships, my wonderful family, my health, and the many opportunities I have these days.

The Reaction I received...

I have to say that I was absolutely thrilled to have been chosen and proud of myself for "Stepping out of the box" which was my New Years Resolution. I decided to go for the things I have wanted to do, but haven't. To push myself beyond my comfort zone, and to do as much as I can to help others.

My family and friends on the other hand, took my newly acquired title as kind of a joke and TRIED to make me feel foolish about it. That was until doors started opening for me and allowing me opportunities that I would never had had otherwise. I think they realize now what an honor and opportunity it has been for me so far. That it was a select group of women that were chosen for this and not a sweepstakes entry or something....lol. It is something I did for "Me", but in turn, it has allowed me to help others in so many different ways.

Ta ta for now...

How I became a Glambassador for Glamour Magazine

I have been asked this question several times, so I thought I would explain the process in a nutshell of how I became a Glamour Glambassador, and a brief description of what it means.

This is where it all started. I saw the following add in Glamour Magazine:

  February 28th, 2009 20:26
GLAMOUR MAGAZINE wants you to sign up to be a GLAMBASSADOR for the magazine in 2009.
As a GLAMBASSADOR, you will:

- Co-host events and more
GLAMOUR looking for only the best of the best in the industry, as only a
select few will be chosen to become part of this group. Go to glamalert.com/glambassador to sign-up for consideration.

I had to submit my entry which included lots of information about myself, an essay, photo's, a video and then complete a phone interview. I was then chosen as one of 100 new "Glambassadors" across the United States. My catagory title "Mombassador" Here is the opening to the letter I received giving me the wonderful news:

Congratulations!

We are looking for the most well-connected influencers in each city, such as active members or leaders of alumni associations, special interest clubs, charities, PTAs and social butterflys.
